blog - Some notes on what I've been up to
I have this piece just opened in the Royal Ulster Academy Annual Exhibition 2018 at the Ulster Museum entitled 'A line on a map'.
The painting has been created from a battered street utility cabinet at a Belfast sectarian interface, but is to be viewed in the context of the larger border on the island and the Brexit discussions. The textures could be mapping but the inclusion of the bolt references security with alternate open or shut conditions. The state of the cabinet is left uncertain with the lock present but not clicked.
I was again privileged to take part in the Inishlacken Project. Ran with a variety of paintings and drawings this year and well as some art installation work.
I took part in this event a the Ulster University. A small postcard. This is my left hand by my right hand.
Once again I was fortunate to be off on the beautiful island of Inishlacken as a part of The Inishlacken Project.

Jan/Feb 2017 issue of Perspective Journal my trip to Puglia and Matera is published
In September 2016
I travelled to the Matera and Puglia regions just at the heel of Italy’s boot.
I brought sketchbooks and materials to allow pencil and pen drawings and a few watercolours. A backpack stool finished the kit.
Lots of time to reflect on how I go about my drawing work and to get in the usual sketches. I've posted some up here.
Published in July 2016 Notations is a collection of eight individual books that together form a folio of drawings, notes, collages, photographs and appropriated images taken from the notebooks of architects who use them as both reflective and reflexive forms of thinking. It includes work by Tom dePaor, Michael Doherty, Grafton Architects, Seamus Lennon, McCullough Mulvin, O’Donnell + Tuomey and Nigel Peake. Based on the principle that notebooks provide unique insights into personal worlds of drawing, this publication offers a set of open notations that can be interpreted and experienced as directly as they were drawn and made: unselfconsciously curious about the world. I was off on the beautiful island of Inishlacken as a part of The Inishlacken Project. Lots of drawings in various media over the week.
Counting myself fortunate to have been selected for the Life Drawing and Painting Masterclass at the Royal Hibernian Academy in Dublin. We had pens, coloured pencils and oil paints. The two days were tutored by the painter Colin Davidson. Lots learned and plenty of thoughts generated for the future. A couple of the pictures made in class.
Again I'll be running an art class at Oideas Gael in Gleann Cholm Cille (Glencolmcille) in the Donegal Gaeltacht. The 2016 class will be from 9 July to 15 July. Looking forward to having lots of fun and creativity over the week. If you want to know more about my class and link to make a booking I've set up a specific page for it. Painting and Sketching in Gleann Cholm Cille.
Just back from a week long residency in Roundstone as a part of the Inishlacken Project. I used all sorts of media this year, Pencil, graphic pen, chinese inks with washes, soluble graphite and acylic painting.
'Idir Dhá Aigne' opens in the Cultúrlann on 1 May 2014 at 7.00pm. My twelve works will be exhibited together with twelve by John Stewart and ten each from Coláiste Feirste and Ashfield Girls School. The exhibition is the culmination of work over the past year which included sketching workshops and walking tours. One of my pieces below 'Ag amharc soir', aicrileach ar chanbhás, 61cm x 122cm
Had a serious week of drawing and thinking with a great group in Cloch na Rón (Roundstone) and Inishlacken in Connemara. All part of the Inishlacken Project run by Rosie McGurran and inspired by Gerard Dillon who spent time on the island.

I'm one of the architects to be featured in this forthcoming film and book on architects sketchbooks. You can view the pretty cool trailer for the film at this link. Well done Paul and Connor. http://drawingonlife.com/

I had a very enjoyable trip at Easter time to Barcelona with a crowd of wine tasters. Drawings were very much in the sketching style for this trip.
