This piece was painted from a drawn collage made in Ostuni in the south of Italy. The work was shortlisted for the 2017 Royal Academy exhibtion in London.
I made some pictures in this mode initially on a visit to the south of Italy. They are collages but drawn plein air with each element being added as a reaction to that which has already been drawn. Each describes a place or part of a specific place often in an attempt to make a work which captures a sense of the whole place rather than any singular view. In making them I am content to move about within the space and to rotate my sketchpad as I see fit.
This piece 'Cathedral Totem' was selected for and exhibited in the 2017 Royal Ulster Academy exhibition. It was also selected for illustration in the catalogue.
